In the wake of Alexander the Great’s conquests, Jewish religious tradition became infused with elements of Greek culture, the political upheaval and intellectual ferment provoking serious conflict between Hellenizers and traditionalists. In this class, we will engage with primary evidence from the philosophers and sectarians of that era, including Josephus, Pliny, the Maccabees and Herod to examine the impact of Greek culture on Jewish expression.
